More than 100,000 evacuated in the Philippines as Fung-wong intensifies into super typhoon

More than 100,000 people were evacuated from eastern and northern regions of the Philippines as Typhoon Fung-wong intensified into a super typhoon. The storm was packing sustained winds of 185 km/h and gusts up to 230 km/h, threatening torrential rain, destructive winds, and storm surges. Storm alert signals were raised across much of the country, leading to power outages in parts of Eastern Visayas and the cancellation of over 300 flights. Preemptive evacuation operations were underway, with residents being moved from flooded areas and encouraged to seek higher ground in coastal provinces like Aurora, where the storm was expected to make landfall. Meteorologists predicted that Fung-wong could bring at least 200mm of rain, potentially causing widespread flooding and overflowing major river basins. Scientists attribute the increasing power of storms like Fung-wong to the climate crisis, which leads to warmer oceans and a more moisture-laden atmosphere.
