The six-member group, formed through a partnership between South Korea's Hybe Corporation and US label Geffen Records, consists of Sophia Laforteza, Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Manon Bannerman, Megan Skiendiel, and Jeong Yoonchae. Lara Raj shared that the constant negativity is jarring, and she deleted her X account after being falsely reported for immigration violations. She described the comments as sexist and "dystopian," where women are ranked and graded on their appearance and skills. Sophia Laforteza added that despite their short career, they have faced significant criticism, and while they understand the public nature of their profession, they are still human.
Katseye was created in 2023 with the goal of forming the "first global girl group," emerging from an international talent search that led to the Netflix reality competition series, The Debut: Dream Academy. Contestants were trained using a blend of K-pop and Western pop performance styles. The group officially debuted in June 2024 with the single "Debut" and later released their first EP, SIS (Soft Is Strong). Their English-language single "Touch" went viral on TikTok, and "Gnarly" became their first Billboard Hot 100 entry. They have also received two Grammy Award nominations, including Best New Artist.
