A convicted sex offender, Abel Kai Gblah, 25, was arrested and charged with sexual assault and kidnapping after allegedly posing as a doctor and assaulting a student at Orangewood Elementary School on November 19th. Gblah, who had been released from prison two weeks prior on similar charges, gained access to the school by entering through an unlocked lobby door with another student.
He lured a grade-school-aged girl into a classroom by impersonating a doctor and stating he needed to examine her. The student was able to push him away, and he fled the scene before police arrived.
Authorities located Gblah shortly after the incident and took him into custody. Court documents reveal Gblah has prior convictions from 2021 for sexual conduct with a minor and for being a registered sex offender.
He was also reportedly involved in human smuggling. The Washington Elementary School District confirmed the incident, stating the school was placed on lockdown and that Gblah was on campus for approximately 10 minutes.
An internal investigation by the district found that Gblah was a former student at the school. Following the investigation, one staff member has been placed on administrative leave.
Gblah is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond, with a preliminary hearing set for December 1st.
