The Reiners themselves had previously expressed frustration and a sense of helplessness in dealing with Nick's addiction, with Rob Reiner even directing a film in 2015, "Being Charlie," inspired by his son's struggles. Nick had also spoken publicly about his past homelessness and destructive behavior while under the influence.
