Human skeletal remains were discovered by artifact hunters in a wooded area of Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Friday morning, around 11:38 a.m. The discovery was made near the southbound side of the Major Deegan Expressway. Police and law enforcement sources confirmed the finding.
Authorities have cordoned off sections of the park as the investigation is ongoing. Photos from the scene show personnel from the city's Office of Chief Medical Examiner removing the remains. As of Friday night, the circumstances surrounding how the remains ended up in the park and the cause of death remain unknown. The NYPD is leading the investigation in conjunction with the city medical examiner's office.
