Cynthia Erivo developed a unique method for embodying her character Elphaba in "Wicked: For Good" by using specific fragrances. For the first part of the film, she used Byredo's Blanche.
For the second part, she found herself drawn to a surprising scent by Named, initially skeptical that it would be too obvious. However, the fragrance consistently caught her attention and resonated with her body chemistry, prompting her to adopt it.
To fully capture Elphaba's complex personality, Erivo layered scents. She combined the floral notes of Lys 41 with the earthy aroma of Witchy Woo, which represented the character's growth and evolution.
Additionally, she incorporated ouds, a scent she frequently wears, into the fragrance combination to create a multi-faceted olfactory representation of Elphaba. Beyond her fragrance approach, Erivo also shared other methods she uses to stay grounded during her busy "Wicked" press tour.
These include packing familiar snacks, wearing comfortable loungewear, and incorporating self-care practices like lymphatic massages and running. She also brings her best friend along for support, which helps her refocus and recenter herself amidst the demanding schedule.
Erivo is currently searching for a new signature scent for her upcoming one-woman production of "Dracula," aiming to find a fragrance that encapsulates all 23 characters in the play.
