Election warning signs for the GOP: From the Politics Desk

Recent election results, particularly in New Jersey, present warning signs for the Republican party. While Virginia saw a predictable Democratic victory, the New Jersey gubernatorial race, which was expected to be competitive, resulted in a significant 13-point win for the Democrat, Mikie Sherrill. This outcome is attributed to two key factors with national implications: the strong opposition from well-to-do, college-educated suburban voters who are uncomfortable with Donald Trump's influence, and the failure of Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli to retain gains among nonwhite voters that Trump had made in 2024. In traditionally Republican suburban counties with high median incomes, Ciattarelli's performance was significantly worse than in his previous campaign, indicating that these voters are now decisively voting against the Trump-aligned GOP. Furthermore, Trump's inroads with nonwhite voters did not transfer to Ciattarelli, with all of Trump's 2024 gains among Hispanic voters in New Jersey being erased.
