Death toll from UPS plane crash at Louisville airport rises to 13

The death toll from an explosion involving a UPS cargo plane at Louisville airport has risen to 13. The plane, identified as UPS flight 2976, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, lost an engine and caught fire shortly after takeoff. UPS released the names of the three victims on board: Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Captain Dana Diamond. Investigators confirmed that the plane's left wing caught fire and an engine fell off. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the aircraft's maintenance history, including work performed in San Antonio, Texas, weeks prior to the crash. Federal Aviation Administration records indicated a crack in a structural piece inside the center wing fuel tank had required repairs in September. The cockpit voice recorder and data recorder, known as black boxes, were recovered and appeared intact.
