Amazon has unveiled a prototype of AI-powered smart glasses called "Amelia" designed specifically for its delivery drivers. These glasses feature a camera and a built-in display and are paired with a waistcoat that has a button for drivers to capture photos of deliveries. Amazon is currently testing these glasses with over a dozen delivery partners and hundreds of drivers across various locations in the United States.
The company custom designed Amelia for the specific use case of last-mile delivery to augment efficiency and minimize repetitive tasks, potentially saving drivers up to 30 minutes per shift. A key safety feature is that the glasses automatically shut off when they detect the driver is in a moving vehicle, ensuring no distractions. Drivers also have the option to manually turn off the glasses and all their sensors, including the camera and microphone, through a hardware switch.
While Amazon's immediate focus is on its delivery drivers, the vice president of Transportation did not rule out the possibility of marketing the Amelia smart glasses to consumers in the future.
