Grateful Dead singer Donna Jean Godchaux dies aged 78

Donna Jean Godchaux, a singer known for her work with the Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 78. She passed away on Sunday at a hospice facility in Nashville after a prolonged battle with cancer. Born Donna Jean Thatcher in Florence, Alabama, Godchaux began her career as a backing singer. During the 1960s, she contributed vocals to recordings by notable artists including Elvis Presley, Percy Sledge, Boz Scaggs, Duane Allman, Cher, and Neil Diamond. Her vocal contributions can be heard on iconic songs like Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" and Percy Sledge's "When A Man Loves a Woman." Godchaux later met and married Grateful Dead member Keith Godchaux, joining the band shortly thereafter. She made her debut on the Grateful Dead's live album "Europe '72" and sang on six of their studio albums, including "Wake of the Flood" and "From the Mars Hotel."
