Military action in Venezuela has become a focal point in the Kentucky Republican primary race between incumbent U. S.
Rep. Thomas Massie and retired Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein.
Massie, known for his non-interventionist stance, criticized the operation on social media, arguing it was driven by oil and regime change rather than legitimate concerns, and that President Trump circumvented Congress's war-making powers. Gallrein, who has President Trump's endorsement, countered that Massie's criticism reveals his "true colors" and is out of step with constituents, emphasizing that the intervention sends a message against rogue regimes and protects American interests, while also potentially offering a better future for Venezuela.
This primary is seen as a test of Trump's influence within the Republican party, particularly as domestic issues like healthcare and affordability are also significant concerns for voters. Massie, a libertarian-leaning congressman, has a history of opposing Trump on various issues, including tax cuts and military actions, and has consistently won reelection despite Trump's disapproval.
Trump has publicly urged his supporters to back Gallrein in the May primary.
