Thomas Waller, an 18-year-old nursery worker, has been sentenced to 10 years in a young offender institution for raping and sexually abusing young children, including boys as young as three. Waller exploited his position at a nursery in Surrey during the summer months, using his responsibilities such as assisting with toilet breaks and changing to gain the trust of his victims before abusing them.
He was found guilty of rape, two counts of causing or inciting sexual activity, and taking indecent photos after a trial. The judge described the situation as heartbreaking, noting the impact on the children's parents who felt responsible.
The offenses occurred between July and August 2024 at a nursery that cannot be named due to legal reasons. In a victim impact statement, one father described the lasting trauma inflicted on his son.
Surrey County Council expressedappallment and sympathy for the affected families, stating that they were informed by partners when disclosures were made and immediately supported safeguarding actions and Ofsted's regulatory role. The council emphasized their commitment to child welfare and encouraged reporting of concerns.
The nursery where the abuse took place stated that they took immediate action upon learning of the concerns about Waller. Waller, who did not react to his sentence, will serve 10 years in detention and five on license.
