Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch has been suspended for one game without pay by the NFL. The suspension stems from an altercation with Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster following the Lions' 30-17 loss to the Chiefs.
The incident occurred after the game concluded. As players were leaving the field, Branch approached Smith-Schuster and, after an exchange of words, slapped Smith-Schuster's helmet, causing him to fall. Smith-Schuster attempted to retaliate, and a scrum involving players from both teams ensued, during which Branch removed Smith-Schuster's helmet.
NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan stated in a letter to Branch that his actions were "unwarranted," posed a "serious risk of injury," and violated the league's standards of conduct and sportsmanship. Branch intends to appeal the suspension.
