Crisis after two prisoners released from same jail as David Lammy voices fury

Justice Secretary David Lammy has expressed outrage following the mistaken release of two prisoners from HMP Wandsworth within days of each other. Registered sex offender Brahim Kaddour-Cherif was wrongly released last week, with police not informed for six days. Fraudster William Smith was also released on Monday due to a mix-up in court records. Both men are now the subject of police manhunts. Kaddour-Cherif, who entered the UK legally in 2019 and had been an overstayer for over five years, was in the initial stages of deportation proceedings. He had been convicted of indecent exposure and sentenced to a community order and placed on the sex offenders' register. He was also facing charges for failing to appear in court for burglary, failing to comply with probation, and breaching sex offender register conditions. Police were alerted to his release after he exposed himself to a woman days after failing to appear in court.
