San Francisco Giants pitching prospect Antonio Jiménez is in critical condition after a car crash in the Dominican Republic that killed three other people. The 24-year-old suffered a fractured femur, spine injuries, and multiple lacerations in the accident, which involved an SUV colliding with two scooters.
The incident occurred early Monday morning in San Pedro de Macorís. While full details are still unclear, Jiménez was hospitalized and is in intensive care.
The Giants organization confirmed awareness of the "tragic car accident" and stated they are gathering information and refraining from further comment out of respect for those affected and due to an ongoing investigation. The three victims who died at the scene were identified as Alfredo García, 28, Israel Carpio, and Víctor de Jesús.
Jiménez played for the Giants' Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats, last season and has also played in the Dominican Winter League. The Dominican Winter League team expressed prayers for Jiménez and condolences to the victims' families.
Jiménez began his professional career in the Rays organization in 2018 before joining the Giants last season, holding a minor league record of 31-13 with a 3.43 ERA and 471 strikeouts. He has not yet appeared in a major league game.
