A range of colourful children's sand products imported from China and sold at Australian retailers including Officeworks have been recalled due to concerns they may contain asbestos. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced the recall for specific 1.3kg and 1kg versions of Kadink Sand, Educational Colours – Rainbow Sand, and Creatistics – Coloured Sand products. Officeworks also recalled additional Kadink sand products.
The recall was initiated after Officeworks commissioned laboratory testing of some Kadink sand products supplied by Educational Colours, which detected microscopic asbestos fibres. Although Officeworks stated an independent risk assessment found no identifiable safety hazard, Educational Colours voluntarily initiated the recall as a precautionary measure.
The affected sand products were sold across Australia between 2020 and 2025 by various retailers. Consumers are advised to stop using the products immediately, seal them in a plastic bag, and keep them away from children, taking precautions such as wearing gloves and a mask when handling.
