A report has found that systemic failures at Medomsley Detention Centre allowed widespread physical and sexual abuse to continue for decades, with the state effectively supplying victims to one of history's worst sex offenders, Neville Husband. The centre, which operated from 1961 to 1987, subjected young men and boys to severe abuse, often starting with violence upon arrival and escalating to routine beatings, humiliation, and sexual assaults. Despite allegations reaching government ministers, the police, and the Prison Service, the abuse was ignored or dismissed. Wardens were either complicit or demonstrated a profound lack of competence and curiosity, allowing the centre to operate largely outside the law.
