Contender, the largest male great white shark ever recorded in the Atlantic, has been tracked pinging off the coast of New Jersey. This shark, estimated to be 32 years old, weighing 1653 pounds, and measuring 13 feet long, was tagged by OCEARCH in January off the Florida/Georgia coastline.
Since his tagging, Contender has been observed migrating north along the East Coast into Canadian waters. He spent time off the Outer Banks in North Carolina from April to mid-June, was pinged off Massachusetts in July, and later tracked south of Pointe-Parent in Quebec in late September. Between October 27-29, he was pinged moving south from Canada, indicating the start of his fall migration.
Most recently, Contender was pinged several miles off Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Tuesday.
