NYC homeless man with nearly two dozen priors slashes church volunteer — then gets freed over DA objections: officials

A homeless man, Frank Fernandez, 64, with a history of 20 prior arrests, allegedly attacked a church volunteer with a boxcutter after being denied access to a church bathroom. The incident occurred at the Church of St. Catherine of Siena on the Upper East Side, where the 63-year-old volunteer was performing janitorial duties. Fernandez, who had previously been banned from the premises, reportedly became enraged and cut the volunteer's arm, tearing his sweatshirt. The victim, who sustained a minor cut, identified his assailant to responding officers. Fernandez was arrested and charged with felony and misdemeanor assault and burglary.
