A severe blizzard with winds up to 120 mph struck Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, resulting in the deaths of five foreign tourists. Among the deceased were a British woman, two German nationals, and two Mexican visitors.
Four other individuals survived the extreme weather conditions. The blizzard caused extremely poor visibility due to sleet and strong winds, which likely led some tourists to become disoriented and stray from designated paths within the remote nature reserve.
Rescue efforts involving military personnel, police, and a search dog were hampered by the adverse weather, preventing helicopters from flying. Chilean President Gabriel Boric extended his condolences to the families of the victims and commended the search and rescue teams for their efforts.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is in contact with local authorities regarding the incident but has not yet confirmed the identity of the British tourist. Torres del Paine is a popular international tourist destination known for its natural beauty.
