Chief Inspector Nigel Thacker insists Glasgow city centre is safe despite concerns from businesses regarding drug dealing and anti-social behavior. He described a significant policing operation around Central station and Clydeside as part of efforts to reassure the public and address complaints. This operation, called Operation Carex, was launched two months prior to gather intelligence on drug dealing networks.
Three arrests were made following dawn raids connected to Operation Carex. It is estimated that approximately 500 addicts inject drugs in the city centre, with many purchasing substances within close proximity to the main railway station. Senior hospitality figures have voiced concerns that the current street conditions are deterring visitors and making it difficult to recruit staff for evening shifts.
Chief Inspector Thacker stated that the operation aims to demonstrate that police are taking these concerns seriously. He emphasized that Glasgow city centre remains a safe place to visit, supported by regular policing operations throughout the week and increased patrols during weekends when risks are known to be higher. He also affirmed that businesses are not being ignored, with local policing teams working with them and partner organizations to address their worries.
