Capitals' Alex Ovechkin first NHL player to score 900 goals

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has become the first player in NHL history to score 900 career goals. He achieved this milestone on November 5, 2025, during the second period of a game against the St. Louis Blues. The goal, a backhanded shot off a rebound, came at 2:39 into the period. Ovechkin, at 40 years old, was already the league's all-time leading goal scorer, having surpassed Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 goals earlier in 2025. He entered the current season needing three goals to reach the 900 mark. He scored his 898th goal against the New York Islanders on October 17, followed by his 899th against the Tampa Bay Lightning a week later.
