A 9-year-old Alabama girl named Delyla McCay sustained severe injuries after a blue heeler dog attacked her on November 7. The dog, being walked by another child, suddenly bit Delyla's face and then attacked her back.
A teenage bystander intervened and punched the dog, but it returned to attack the girl. Delyla's mother stated that her daughter was simply sitting outside their Hanceville apartment when the attack occurred and was not provoking the animal.
The dog allegedly grabbed Delyla's face and shook it. Screams erupted as Delyla remained frozen in shock.
The young girl was airlifted to Children's Hospital. Her face was left bloody and bruised, requiring dozens of stitches across her nose, mouth, cheeks, and upper lip.
She also received stitches on her back and body, and rabies shots. She will require plastic surgery for her injuries and is still in shock.
The dog involved in the attack has since been euthanized by Cullman County Animal Control. Its remains were sent for testing as it was discovered to not be current on its vaccinations.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
