British tourists visiting popular destinations, including Mexico, are being warned about the dangers of methanol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic drinks. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has expanded warnings to eight new countries due to a rise in deaths and serious illnesses linked to tainted alcohol.
Methanol poisoning can be fatal and its symptoms, which may not appear for 12-24 hours, can mimic a severe hangover. Initial signs include headache, nausea, and vomiting, but when coupled with abdominal pain and dizziness, it could indicate methanol poisoning. Symptoms can rapidly worsen to include blurred vision, confusion, rapid breathing, coma, and death.
