Judge orders improvements at Broadview ICE facility after claims of inhumane conditions

A federal judge has ordered immediate improvements at the Broadview U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility near Chicago for 14 days due to claims of inhumane conditions. U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman's order mandates providing detainees with clean bedding, sufficient sleeping space, soap, towels, toilet paper, hygiene products, and prescribed medications. Holding rooms must be cleaned twice daily, and detainees must be allowed to shower every other day, receive three full meals, and have bottled water upon request. Additionally, authorities must allow detainees private, cost-free calls to lawyers and provide a list of pro bono attorneys, while agents are prohibited from misrepresenting documents presented to detainees. The judge found witness testimony regarding overflowing toilets, crowded cells, lack of beds, and foul-tasting water credible, describing the conditions as "unnecessarily cruel."
