A terrifying waterspout tornado struck the Spanish resort of Mazarron in Costa Calida, causing significant damage to moored vessels, bar and restaurant terraces, and sending debris flying through the air. Onlookers described scenes of horror as parts of yachts were torn away and yachts were overturned. While no human casualties were reported directly from the tornado, the freak weather phenomenon occurred during a period of intense atmospheric instability, with at least two twisters hitting the area.
The storms, which affected several regions including Murcia, Malaga, and Valencia, resulted in a tragic human cost. In Illora, Granada, the body of a missing man was discovered. In Alhaurin el Grande, Malaga, a massive search operation was underway for another man who disappeared while attempting to cross a swollen river, and the body of his companion was found. The missing man had been trying to cross the Fahala River with a friend after leaving a restaurant. In a separate incident in Illora, a man was swept away by a torrent of water while trying to cross a stream on his motorbike. Additionally, in Sabadell, a woman was critically injured when a streetlight fell on her during heavy rain and gales. Marbella was particularly hard-hit by severe flooding, with roads submerged and parts of the town under knee-deep water, leading to a red alert advising residents to stay indoors. Valencia also experienced torrential rain and hail, prompting the evacuation of 50 homes in La Pobla Llarga due to flood risks.
