Independent MP Helen Haines has proposed amendments to the freedom of information bill, aiming to remove expanded cabinet secrecy provisions and associated fees. Haines argues these changes are antidemocratic and will reduce transparency and accountability, making it even harder to access documents related to cabinet discussions. Her first amendment was voted down, and despite attempts to limit further debate, the opposition and crossbench have supported continuing the discussion. The government has been blocking amendments from crossbench MPs, including Haines and Sophie Scamps, though these amendments have received support from the Greens. While the government can push the bill through the House, its passage in the Senate, where Labor lacks a majority, is expected to be more challenging.
