Storm Claudia is forecast to bring significant rainfall across the UK, with amber weather warnings in effect from midday to midnight on Friday. These warnings predict substantial downpours, with 50 to 75mm of rain expected in Wales and 40 to 60mm in various regions of England. Over 50 flood warnings and alerts have already been issued, indicating a high risk of disruption.
The Met Office anticipates that some areas under the amber warning could receive over 150mm of rain in a 24-hour period, equivalent to a month's worth, falling on already saturated ground. This extreme rainfall, combined with potential 60-70mph gusts in exposed northwestern areas of England and Wales, raises concerns about deep floodwater, danger to life, damage to homes and businesses, and widespread travel disruption. Thunderstorms are also a possibility on Friday afternoon, further exacerbating the impacts.
Natural Resources Wales is urging the public to be vigilant and prepare for potential flooding, advising individuals to check their specific flood risk and sign up for warning services. A 24-hour yellow weather warning for rain is also active in the southern parts of the country from early Friday morning, with some areas in southern Scotland expecting up to 40-60mm of rain under a separate yellow warning in place until Thursday evening. The forecast for the coming days indicates continued unsettled weather, with a mix of rain, showers, and colder conditions.
