Sujanthis Ketheeswararasa, a 30-year-old Sri Lankan national, has been arrested in Liverpool by the National Crime Agency. He is suspected of raping a young girl in France and had reportedly travelled to the UK to avoid French authorities.
The National Extradition Unit of the NCA detained Ketheeswararasa in Liverpool city centre. He appeared in a London court on Thursday for initial extradition proceedings and has been remanded in custody.
Ketheeswararasa is scheduled to appear via video link at Westminster Magistrates' Court on November 27, with a full extradition hearing set for March 26 of the following year. The National Crime Agency stated that protecting children from sexual abuse is their highest priority and that they worked with international partners to locate and arrest the suspect.
