Nassau County police arrested Gustavo Tellez Carillo, 36, and Erika Gomez Moreno, 33, for shoplifting an undisclosed amount of merchandise from a Long Island Target store on November 9th. After apprehending the couple, police discovered they were in the country illegally.
Both Carillo and Moreno were charged with fourth-degree grand larceny. Following their arrest and charges, Nassau police handed them over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Officials stated the couple is now subject to removal from the country. This handover occurred under a 287(g) program agreement between Nassau County and ICE, which deputizes local law enforcement to identify and detain illegal migrants.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman has expressed his commitment to working with ICE to enhance county safety and address crimes committed by individuals in the country illegally.
