Many major UK supermarkets are adjusting their opening and closing hours for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in 2026 to accommodate the holiday period. Most supermarkets were closed on Christmas Day, and some will also be closed on January 1st.
Tesco stores will operate from 6 am to 7 pm on New Year's Eve, with Express stores open until 10 pm. On New Year's Day, regular Tesco stores will be open from 9 am to 6 pm, and Express stores from 8 am to 10 pm. Sainsbury's will be open from 10 am to 7 pm on New Year's Eve, with convenience stores open from 6 am to 9 pm. On New Year's Day, Sainsbury's stores will open from 8 am to 8 pm, and convenience stores from 9 am to 9 pm.
Aldi and Lidl will be closed on New Year's Day, after being open from 8 am to 6 pm on New Year's Eve. Asda will be open from 7 am to 7 pm on New Year's Eve and from 9 am to 6 pm on New Year's Day. Co-op stores will have their usual opening times until 7 pm on New Year's Eve, with convenience stores open from 6 am or 7 am to 8 pm. On New Year's Day, Co-op stores will be open from 10 am to 7 pm, and convenience stores from 9 am to 8 pm. Waitrose and Marks & Spencer will be closed on New Year's Day, with Marks & Spencer open until 7 pm on New Year's Eve. Morrisons will be open from 7 am to 7 pm on New Year's Eve and from 9 am to 6 pm on New Year's Day.
