The suspect in the Brown University shooting, identified as 48-year-old Portuguese national Claudio Neves Valente, has been found dead. Officials announced on Thursday night that Valente, a former Brown student, is also believed to be the shooter in the death of MIT professor Nuno Gomes Loureiro on Monday. Valente was discovered deceased at a storage facility in Rhode Island, where investigators found two firearms and evidence matching the Brown University crime scene. The Providence Police Chief stated that Valente took his own life and is believed to have acted alone.
The shooting occurred on Saturday in a building where students were taking final exams. Valente studied physics at Brown from 2000 to 2001 before withdrawing. The FBI had offered a reward for information leading to the suspect's identification and arrest, and the delay in apprehending him had caused significant anxiety within the community. The two victims of the Brown shooting were identified as sophomore Ella Cook and freshman Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, with an on-campus memorial growing in their honor.
