Cosprop, a London-based costuming company run by John Bright, has been creating theatrical costumes for film, TV, and theater for 60 years, specializing in historically accurate period pieces from the 18th century to the 1960s. The company is renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and has dressed numerous prominent actors, including Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Dame Maggie Smith, and Cate Blanchett.
Cosprop is responsible for iconic costumes such as Helena Bonham Carter's outfits in "A Room with a View" and Meryl Streep's suit in "Out of Africa," as well as costumes for "Downton Abbey," "The Duchess," and the upcoming "Wuthering Heights" remake starring Margot Robbie. The company operates as both an archive and an atelier, with skilled artisans meticulously hand-stitching garments that are available for hire by film crews.
Cosprop insists on bringing actors to them for fittings rather than allowing productions to make alterations, ensuring the integrity and preservation of their costumes. This dedication to authenticity, using only natural fibers and adhering strictly to period styles, means their creations rarely look dated.
Despite the challenges of preserving delicate vintage garments from moths and the occasional wear-and-tear from actors, Cosprop has a robust system for repairing and reusing materials. With the rise of streaming services, Cosprop has experienced a surge in demand, working on a constant stream of productions, some of which are highly secretive.
They are currently involved in projects such as the HBO Harry Potter series, "The Gilded Age," and Tom Ford's new movie, "Cry to Heaven," which will mark Adele's acting debut, leading to anticipated fittings for the singer. Owner John Bright, who launched Cosprop in 1965, has received significant recognition, including an Oscar for his work on "A Room with a View," and his company has been nominated for 61 Academy Awards.
However, Bright emphasizes that maintaining relationships with actors and preserving the art of costume design are more important to him than accolades. An exhibition celebrating Cosprop's 60-year history is currently running at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London.
