Cursor, a $29.3 billion startup specializing in AI coding assistance, has implemented an internal AI Help Desk that successfully handles approximately 80% of its employees' support tickets. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to deploy AI across the company's internal operations, as stated by CEO Michael Truell at Fortune's Brainstorm AI conference. Beyond ticket resolution, Cursor utilizes an AI-powered communication system that enables employees to query organizational information, with significant customization of this setup. The company is also embedding engineers internally to develop custom AI tooling for various departments like operations and sales.
While larger organizations face challenges integrating AI due to data silos and technical sprawl, Cursor appears to be navigating these issues effectively. The startup, founded in 2022 by MIT graduates, has experienced rapid growth, surpassing $1 billion in annualized revenue with over 300 employees. Its AI coding tool, launched in 2023, has gained popularity among software developers. Despite some research suggesting AI tools might slow down experienced developers, a University of Chicago study indicated that teams using Cursor's AI coding assistant merged 39% more pull requests, with senior developers showing greater effectiveness and skill in utilizing these AI agents. Truell expressed surprise at these findings, noting that senior engineers seem to derive more value from the tools than initially anticipated.
