SNAP cuts take effect in Illinois and nationwide

SNAP benefits are facing cuts nationwide due to a federal government shutdown. Two federal judges have ordered the Trump administration to continue funding these benefits temporarily by tapping into contingency funds. This action aims to provide relief to approximately 42 million SNAP recipients across the country, including nearly one million in Illinois. The core issue stems from the Department of Agriculture's inability, as stated by an Office of Management and Budget spokesperson, to access a $6 billion federal contingency fund for SNAP. The department claims these funds are not available to cover regular benefits for fiscal year 2026 because the appropriation for them no longer exists. Illinois is among 24 states that have sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture over this decision. In response to the potential cuts, Governor JB Pritzker has directed $20 million to Illinois food banks as a temporary measure. However, these food banks are already strained by increased demand from federal workers not receiving paychecks due to the shutdown. The Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Illinois Department of Human Services are also offering assistance, with delivery services contributing as well.
