A man was shot and killed by police on Sunday evening following a two-car crash on the A11 in Thetford, Norfolk. The incident occurred around 8:35 PM GMT when police were called to the scene. A man, believed to be a driver involved in the crash, reportedly left the scene holding what appeared to be a handgun. Armed response officers responded, and the suspect was shot by police from a short distance. Despite efforts by emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the shooting, a section of the A11 London Road remained closed in both directions, with forensic officers seen surveying the carriageway. Norfolk Police have referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as per standard procedure. Assistant Chief Constable David Buckley stated that while armed officers respond to many firearms-related calls annually, instances of police discharging firearms are rare. He assured that a full and independent investigation is underway, with full cooperation from the police force, including the handover of all body-worn footage and 999 calls to ensure transparency. Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
