Sara Cox, a BBC Radio 2 host, successfully completed her Great Northern Marathon Challenge, running 135 miles over five days to raise over £7 million for BBC Children in Need. The challenge, which began on November 10th, saw Cox trekking from Kielder Forest to Pudsey, West Yorkshire, enduring significant pain throughout the endeavor.
Prince William sent a video message of support, broadcast on Scott Mills' Radio 2 show, congratulating Cox on her near completion and encouraging her for the final stretch. He expressed confidence that the people of Pudsey would welcome her warmly and acknowledged the nation's pride in her efforts.
The fundraising total of over £7 million exceeded expectations, with Cox expressing gratitude for the public's generosity. This challenge was the most ambitious distance undertaken by Radio 2 for the annual fundraising campaign.
Cox also highlighted the motivational support she received from women over 50, embracing the stage of her life. The BBC's annual Children in Need fundraising event, which kicked off on November 14th, featured celebrity hosts, sketches, musical performances, and appeals for donations.
The three-hour special was broadcast live from MediaCityUK in Salford.
