A new docuseries has brought renewed attention to the 2008 divorce of Alex Rodriguez and Cynthia Scurtis, which was fueled by allegations of Rodriguez's affair with Madonna. The claims surfaced less than three months after the birth of their daughter Ella, with Scurtis citing "extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct" in her divorce filing.
In the docuseries, Scurtis implied that infidelity occurred around the time Ella was born, coinciding with a 2008 New York Post headline that read: "Alex Rodriguez and Madonna Squeeze Play." While neither Rodriguez nor Scurtis directly named Madonna when discussing their breakup on the series, Scurtis stated, "At that point, we got divorced."
Rodriguez, who was a famous MLB player at the time, denied the rumors then, as did Madonna, who was married to Guy Ritchie. However, reports at the time suggested a close relationship between Rodriguez and Madonna, with a friend of Rodriguez's claiming he was "in love with" her and described her as "my f***ing soulmate." Rodriguez himself acknowledged in the docuseries that he "could have been more loyal" and a "better husband," while Scurtis expressed hope for different an outcome for their marriage. Madonna and Ritchie announced their own separation shortly after Scurtis filed for divorce.
