Jets coach Aaron Glenn has explained that relying heavily on quarterback Justin Fields's running ability, which has been a bright spot for the offense, is unsustainable and puts him at risk of injury. While Fields showcased his legs effectively in a 14-play opening drive touchdown against the Patriots, the offense struggled afterward, punting multiple times before scoring again.
Glenn emphasized that the team cannot afford to put Fields in situations where he functions like a running back, as this is too dangerous. Fields had a mixed performance against the Patriots, completing passes for 116 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 67 yards and a touchdown.
Despite some positive moments on touchdown drives, he also experienced off-target throws and a crucial fumble. The overall offense continues to underperform, scoring under 20 points for the fourth time this season, with dropped passes also hindering their progress.
Fields himself acknowledged his performance was not good enough following the loss. Following this defeat to the Patriots, the Jets' record dropped to 2-8, highlighting the team's ongoing struggles despite any individual offensive highlights.
Glenn's comments indicate a strategic concern about over-reliance on Fields's athleticism, suggesting a need for a more balanced and less physically taxing approach to their offensive game plan to protect their quarterback.
