Reports of problems surged on the outage monitor Downdetector, peaking at over 11 million globally. Amazon announced that all AWS services had returned to normal operations around 23:00 BST.
Amazon stated the outage appeared to be related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1. DNS, or Domain Name System, functions as an internet phone book, translating website names into computer-readable numbers. Disruptions to this process can prevent users from accessing online content. Experts highlighted the outage's demonstration of the significant risks associated with the heavy reliance on a few dominant cloud providers, with an estimated 70% of cloud computing relying on Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.
