Puka Nacua's parents, Penina and the late Lionel Nacua, were instrumental in his journey to becoming a star NFL wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams. Lionel, a devoted football fan and former wrestler, trained Puka and his four brothers, instilling in them a passion for the sport and a physical style of play, which included studying defensive legends.
He tragically passed away from diabetes complications when Puka was 11 years old. Following Lionel's death, Penina became the sole provider and unwavering supporter for their six children, a role Puka deeply admires and draws strength from, often referring to her as the "rock of our family." Penina continued to ensure her sons could pursue their football dreams, demonstrating immense sacrifice and dedication.
Puka maintains a very close relationship with his mother, video calling her daily and speaking to her from the locker room after every game. This bond was further strengthened when Puka and his brother Samson transferred to BYU to be closer to Penina and their grandmother during her battle with ovarian cancer.
Puka's physical playing style is attributed to his father's film study and training methods, while his resilience and strength are inspired by his mother's journey as a single parent.
