President Trump stated that he does not currently believe he needs to use the Insurrection Act in Minneapolis, though he reiterated that he would if necessary. This statement comes after earlier threats to invoke the law, which permits the use of military forces for domestic suppression, in response to protests against federal immigration agents in the city.
The protests in Minneapolis escalated following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging racial profiling and unlawful arrests by federal immigration authorities in Minnesota.
Trump has also criticized Minnesota's governor and the Minneapolis mayor, claiming they have lost control of the city amidst the demonstrations.
