Joe Root scored an unbeaten 135, ending his 13-year wait for a Test century on Australian soil and leading England's fightback on day one of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba. Despite an early batting collapse that saw England at 5-2 after Mitchell Starc took two wickets in his first two overs, Root, along with Zak Crawley (76), steadied the innings.
Crawley and Root built a 100-run partnership, and later, Root and Jofra Archer (32 not out) added 61 runs in the final 44 balls of the day, propelling England to a close of 325-9. Starc was the most successful bowler for Australia, taking six wickets for 71 runs.
