The Baltimore Ravens have hired Jesse Minter, the former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator, as their new head coach. This move marks the first time since 2008 that the Ravens have a new head coach, following the departure of John Harbaugh after an 18-year tenure. Minter, 42, previously served as an assistant coach for the Ravens from 2017 to 2020 under John Harbaugh.
During his time with the Chargers, Minter significantly improved their defense. He led a unit that allowed the fewest points in the NFL in 2024, a stark contrast to the previous year when the defense ranked 24th. In the last season, the Chargers' defense finished in the top 10 for both scoring defense (ninth) and yards allowed (fifth). Minter was a highly sought-after candidate, with nine NFL teams requesting to interview him for head coaching vacancies. He met with the Ravens on Wednesday and withdrew his name from consideration for the Cleveland Browns' position. The Ravens conducted an extensive search, interviewing 16 candidates before selecting Minter.
In Baltimore, Minter will be responsible for leading quarterback Lamar Jackson and a talented roster. The team is aiming to reach a contract extension with Jackson before free agency. The Ravens are coming off a losing season, their third in the past 18 years. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta expressed confidence in Minter, describing him as a strong leader with a brilliant football mind. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh had anticipated Minter's departure, acknowledging the strength of the defense Minter had established. Several Chargers players, including safeties Derwin James and Tony Jefferson, have publicly supported Minter's hiring by the Ravens. Minter's exit also means the Chargers will have a new offensive coordinator, with Mike McDaniel reportedly set to replace Greg Roman.
