North Yorkshire Police has self-referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following an alleged attempted murder in York. The incident, involving a woman in her 20s who suffered serious injuries, occurred on Lindley Road in Rawcliffe on Saturday, January 10.
The police force indicated they had prior contact with the alleged victim before the stabbing. Jake Joe Bamber, 35, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a knife in relation to the event. As of Wednesday, the victim was reported to be in a "serious but stable" condition in the hospital.
The IOPC referral is a standard procedure when police have had previous contact with individuals involved in such investigations, according to a police spokesperson. The victim and her family have been notified of the referral and are receiving support from specialist officers. Bamber, who has no fixed address, was remanded in custody after appearing at York Magistrates’ Court and is scheduled to appear at Leeds Crown Court on February 11. He did not enter a plea during his court hearing.
